김천시해피투게더영어스피치대회 수상자 인터뷰

5명의 YLC율곡어학원 소속 꿈나무들의 소감

김천시에서 해피투게더 김천 운동의 활성화를 위한 사업의 일환으로 지역 꿈나무 인재양성에도 한목을 하고 있는 해피투게더 김천 영어스피치대회 2회 참여자중 수상자 5명과 인터뷰를 진행했다.

6월 진행된 제2회 해피투게더 김천운동 영어스피치대회에서는 초등 저학년부 6명, 초등 고학년부 6명 초등부에서 총 12명의 수상자가 나왔으며, 이 중 50%에 가까운 5명이 율곡동 소재 YLC율곡어학원에서 교육을 받고 있다.

지역의 영어스피치대회에서 많은 수상자를 양성해낸 YLC율곡어학원은 ‘필요한, 해야만 하는 공부’가 아닌 배움을 즐겁고 자연스럽게 받아들이게 하는 교육 방법을 추구하며, 원어민 담임제로 1년 6학기 수업, 다양한 프로젝트 수업과 과학, 수학, 영어(스피치, 에세이), 미술, 체육 등 모든 수업을 영어로 진행하고 있다.

특히 YLC는 이코노미스트 인텔리전스 유닛이 실시한 '세계교육대비지수'조사에서 영미권 국가 중 '미래 대비 교육을 가장 잘 하는 나라' 1위에 선정될 정도로 교육 강국으로 인정받고 있는 뉴질랜드의 교육 방식을 도입해 운영되고 있으며, 김천에서 원어민에게 교육을 받을 수 있는 최고 수준의 영어전문 교육시설이다.

■ 5명의 수상자에게 듣는 수상 소감

◆ 송슬아 - 초등 고학년 장려 수상

I am really thankful for the help the YLC teachers gave me and I am happy that I won a prize. After writing my script and correcting it, I worked on perfecting all the parts of my speech for many days. All the effort paid off and I look forward to next year again. I would love to say to all the students for next year, “You can do it!”YLC 선생님들의 도움에 정말 감사하고 상을 받게 되어 기쁩니다. 대본을 쓰고 수정한 후 며칠 동안 연설의 모든 부분을 완성하기 위해 노력했어요. 모든 노력에 감사하며 내년에 다시 좋은 대회를 기대합니다. 내년에 도전하는 모든 학생들에게 “할 수 있다!”는 말을 하고 싶습니다.

◆ 김아령 –초등 저학년 장려 수상

The speech contest was fun this year, I practiced my speech about 100 times! (Haha). I was happy when I won a prize, my mom bought me some flowers and I felt special. Thank you to everyone who congratulated me.

올해 스피치 콘테스트 재밌어서 100번 정도 스피치 연습했어요! (ㅋ). 나는 상을 받았을 때 기뻤고, 어머니가 나에게 꽃을 사 주셨어요. 내가 특별하다고 느껴서 뿌듯합니다. 축하해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다.

◆ 강규주 – 초등 저학년 장려 수상

I feel delighted after receiving a prize. I put in all my effort to correct my speech and worked hard on it for a few weeks straight. This was a great experience for me. I am very happy that my friends studying together won the award. It's fun to do a special and fun project at YLC. And my homeroom teacher, Nick, teaches a lot of new knowledge and show me the class in a humorous way.

상을 받고 나니 기분이 좋아요. 저는 자연스럽게 스피치를 하기 위해 온 힘을 쏟았고, 몇 주 동안 계속 열심히 연습했어요. 이 대회는 저에게 좋은 경험이었습니다. 같이 YLC에서 공부하는 친구들이 상을 많이 타서 기뻐요. YLC에서 함께 특별하고 재미있는 프로젝트 수업을 해서 즐거워요. 담임 선생님이신 닉이 수업시간에 많은 새로운 지식을 알려주고 유머러스 한 방식으로 가르쳐 주셔서 매일 수업이 재미있어요.

◆ 정하윤 – 초등 저학년 우수 수상

English is the language that I need to travel around the world, which is my wish. I like that I can have fun with my friends during the juice and PE time in YLC. Listening to the others giving their speech, I could feel I wasn’t the best. I didn’t expect I would win the second place. It was an amazing experience. I want to be a world-wide writer just like my role model, Joanne Rowling.

Andrew teacher is funny, kind and teaches English well.

영어는 내 소원인 세계여행에 필요한 언어입니다. 영어를 배우며 율곡어학원에서 주스타임과 PE타임에 친구들과 재미있게 놀이 할 수 있어서 좋아요. 이번 대회에서 다른 학생들의 스피치를 들으면서 내가 최고가 아니라는 것을 알게 되었어요. 입상을 못 할 줄 알았는데 입상을 해서 놀랍고, 신기했어요. 나의 롤 모델인 조앤롤링처럼 세계적인 작가가 되고 싶어요. 담임 선생님이신 앤드류는 재미있고, 친절하시고, 영어를 잘 가르쳐 주십니다.

◆ 강동희 – 초등 저학년 장려 수상

What I like about English is that I can communicate with people from diverse backgrounds.

Through studying at YLC and interacting with different English teachers and classmates, I learned to speak freely in English without fear. I gained a lot of confidence by participating in the speech contest. Although practicing was difficult, I learned a lot. And having received this award, I would like to participate in the competition again. I want to do something that helps others. No matter where I work, I will use all my linguistic resources, including English. YLC teachers are really great. I'm having a lot of fun studying at YLC because my teachers focus on play-based learning and provide many different communicative activities.

영어에 대해 좋은 건 다양한 배경을 가진 사람들과 대화할 수 있는 것입니다. 선생님들과 반 친구들과 얘기하면서 자유롭게 영어 쓰는 걸 배우고, 스피치 대회 참가하면서 자신감이 더 생겼어요. 비록 연습은 힘들었지만 상을 받고 나니 또 대회에 참여하고 싶다는 생각을 했어요. 저는 다른 사람들을 돕는 일을 하고 싶어요. 어디서 일하든지 영어를 포함한 나의 모든 언어 능력을 사용하고 싶어요. YLC 선생님들은 너무 좋아요. 놀이식교육에 집중하여 다양한 말하기 액티비티를 제공해 주십니다.

The students at YLC

As the senior and advanced level teacher at YLC, there are many things about the students at the academy that bring me great delight. There are many students who come into class and have the best possible attitude towards learning and using English. A highlight in my class is when students make and perfectly execute jokes in English, showing that they have a good understanding and can read between the lines, even in a language that is not their first language. I love it when students put in the extra effort to use what we have learned in class, may it be grammar or vocabulary. The students often do just that, and show it when it comes time for creative writing, they always impress me with their English skills and ability to learn quickly.

The way our classes are taught is to create a good foundation of understanding for each class. The work is explained well and the structure of what is expected. We would then go through the vocabulary and parts of speech that the students need to learn. Creating a good structure in class helps the students to feel more comfortable with their learning experience and it gives them the confidence to do their best. In a short while after learning the structure of the class, the students are able to work independently. Our goals for the future are for every student to have a high level of self-confidence. I want them to see that they have the ability to do well. Also to create in them a great foundation for writing and speech structures, use of a wide range of vocabulary and most of all for the students to enjoy their experience while learning. We will continue to grow from strength to strength as a group and as a team.

YLC의 시니어 교사로서, 율곡어학원의 학생들에 대한 많은 것들이 저에게 큰 기쁨을 가져다 줍니다. 학생들은 수업에 와서 영어를 배우고 사용하는 데 있어 최선을 다합니다. 제 수업의 하이라이트는 학생들이 영어로 농담을 하고 완벽하게 실행하여, 모국어가 아닌 언어로도 좋은 이해력으로 읽을 수 있음을 보여주는 것입니다. 저는 학생들이 수업에서 배운 문법이나 어휘를 사용하기 위해 추가 노력을 기울이는 것을 좋아합니다. 창의적인 글쓰기가 필요할 때 학생들은 매우 빠르게 영어 실력이 늡니다.

YLC의 수업 방식은 각 수업에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 좋은 기초를 만드는 것입니다. 수업에서 좋은 구조를 만드는 것은 학생들이 학습 경험에 더 편안하게 느끼도록 하고 최선을 다할 수 있는 자신감을 줍니다. 수업의 구조를 배운 후 얼마 지나지 않아 학생들은 독립적으로 창의적인 작업을 할 수 있습니다. 미래에 대한 우리의 목표는 모든 학생이 높은 수준의 자신감을 갖는 것입니다. 나는 그들이 잘 할 수 있는 능력이 있다는 것을 보고 싶습니다. 또한 쓰기 및 말하기 구조에 대한 훌륭한 기초를 만들고 광범위한 어휘를 사용하며 무엇보다도 학생들이 학습하는 동안 경험을 즐길 수 있도록 합니다. YLC에서 우리는 팀으로서 최선을 다할 것입니다.

As a teacher at YLC, I am not only able to prepare the kids for their educational needs in English, but also able to teach them English as an actual language. This means they get to communicate and have conversations with native speakers, learn about the culture of other countries, and have some fun and engaging experiences that will be great memories for them to carry into the future. In short, they learn that English can be fun and enjoyable! I have been living in Gimcheon almost a year now, and I have really enjoyed the unique style a structure of the city of Gimcheon. It is peaceful, comfortable, and sleek! I would love to settle down here for a few more years!

How do we teach effectively as a teacher? The first step is to indentify your own strengths and weaknesses as a teacher. For myself, my strengths lie in really getting to know the students and forming relationships with them. I have excellent rapport with my students and am able to teach effectively because I first establish a relationship with my students and understanding their learning needs. What are my goals for the future as a teacher? My goal is to always improve month by month. A teacher can be a student as well. As such, my focus is self-reflection so that I can always become a better teacher, and so, perfect my craft!

YLC의 교사로서 저는 아이들의 교육적 필요를 준비시킬 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 실제 언어로 영어를 가르칠 수도 있습니다. 이것은 학생들이 원어민과 의사 소통하고 대화를 나누며 문화에 대해 배우는 것입니다. 다른 나라와 좋은 추억이 될 재미 있고 매력적인 경험이 학생들이 미래로 나아갈 수 있도록 만듭니다. 이제 거의 1년 동안 김천에 살고 있으며, 나는 독특한 경험을 정말 즐겼습니다. 김천은 평화롭고 편안하고 즐거운 곳입니다. 김천에서 몇 년 더 살고 싶습니다.

교사로서 어떻게 효과적으로 가르칠 수 있습니까? 첫 번째 단계는 자신의 강점을 파악하는 것입니다. 그리고 학생들과 좋은 관계를 유지하며 내가 먼저 다가가기 때문에 효과적으로 가르칠 수 있습니다. 교사로서 미래의 목표는 무엇입니까? 내 목표는 항상 매달 개선하는 것입니다. 교사도 학생이 될 수 있습니다. 이와 같이 나의 초점은 내가 항상 잘 할 수 있도록 자기 반성을 하고 더 나은 선생님이 되기 위해 노력합니다.
